Scientific Advisory Board

Professor Andrzej Pilc, PhD

andrzej pilcProfessor Andrzej Pilc is the Head of the Department of Neurobiology at that institute, as well as the Head of the Department of Drug Economics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Collegium Medicum of Jagiellonian University. Professor Pilc graduated from medical studies in 1972 in Faculty of Medicine of Medical University in Łódź (MD degree) and in 1977 he defended his Ph.D. thesis in the same institution. In 1982 he was awarded one year post-doctoral fellowship in Synthelabo in Paris, and in 1984 he started his 2-year stay in Medical School of Texas University in Houston. In 1987 he defended his habilitation thesis (D.Sc.) and in the same year he was promoted to the full professor. His scientific interests focus on mechanisms of action of psychotropic drugs with the special attention on anxiolytics and antidepressants. Professor Pilc was the coauthor of the hypothesis of up-regulation of GABA B receptor by the antidepressant drugs. He is currently working on the role of glutamate metabotropic receptors as targets for psychotropic drugs. Professor Pilc published nearly 200 scientific articles in international journals and is among the most cited psychopharmacologists in Poland. He is also a reviewer in a number of international journals.

Professor Bożena Kamińska, PhD

kaminskaProfessor Bozena Kaminska graduated with MSc in embryology from Warsaw University and PhD in biochemistry from Nencki Institute. Between 1991 and 1997 she was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Neurophysiology at Nencki Institute. Additionally in 1990 and 1992 Prof. Kaminska was a visiting scientist at the University of Catania, Italy. In years 1994-1996 she did her Postdoc at the Department of Psychology at McGill University, Montreal Quebec, Canada. In 1997 Prof. Kaminska completed her habilitation and became the Head of the Laboratory of Transcription Regulation at the Nencki Institute. Prof. Kamiska spent another two years, between 2001 and 2002 as a Visiting scientist at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA, USA. Since 2003 Prof. Kaminska holds the position of Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Transcription Regulation at Nencki Institute, as well as, since 2009, position of the Director of the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine at Warsaw Medical University. Throughout her scientific career, Prof. Kaminska has been a Principal Investigator in more than 24 national and international research grant projects, and an Invited Lecturer at 25 international and national meetings and congresses. Prof. Kaminska received the Prime Minister Award for the best habilitation, and been elected a member of 3 Committees of Polish Academy of Sciences: Committee of Neurobiology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry and Biophysics, as well as she’s the Coordinator of Polish-French consortium GROUPEMENT DE RECHERCHE EUROPEEN (GDRE) DE «L’ONCOLOGIE FONDAMENTALE A LA BIOTHERAPIE DU CANCER ».

Associate Professor Przemysław Juszczyński, MD PhD

PJProfessor Przemysław Juszczynski graduated from Medical University of Lodz in 2000 with an MD degree, and in 2002 he defended his dissertation “Genetic polymorphisms in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) locus influence non-Hodgkin's lymphoma outcome” and obtained a PhD degree. His work was recognized and awarded by the START fellowship from Foundation for Polish Science. Right afterwards, Profesor Juszcznski received an ICRETT fellowship from International Union Against Cancer (Geneva, Switzerland) and KOLUMB fellowship from Foundation for Polish Science and in August 2003 began his postdoctoral training at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. In 2006 Professor Juszczynski joined Harvard Medical School junior faculty as an Instructor in Medicine. In 2010, he joined the Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, where he obtained DSc (habilitation) degree and was appointed an Associate Professor. Since 2011 Professor Juszczynski holds a position of a Scientific Director of the Institute. In the same year, he received a TEAM grant “Tumor suppressor function of FOXO1 in diffuse large B-cell lymphomas: mechanisms of regulation and personalized rational targeting strategies” from the Foundation for Polish Science. Professor Juszczynski is also an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research and American Society of Hematology .

Professor Jerzy Ostrowski, MD PhD

ostrowski minProfessor Jerzy Ostrowski is the Head of the Department of Genetics, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology and professor of medicine at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Medical Center for Postgraduate Education. He is a specialist in the field of internal medicine and gastroenterology and has been certified by the European Board of Gastroenterology as “a fellow in gastroenterology“. One of his research interests includes the application of integrative genomics (microarrays, next generation sequencing and mass spectrometry combined with bioinformatic analyzes) to study molecular mechanisms of complex diseases. In 1997-2004, professor Ostrowski spent each year 3 to 6 months as a visiting scientist at the Department of Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. He has received several academic awards, including Award of the Prime Minister for the outstanding scientific achievements in the fields of medicine and molecular biology; Professor Subsidy from the Foundation for Polish Science; 16 awards of the Ministry of Health. He has been the principal investigator in numerous research grant projects and the promoter of more than 20 doctoral dissertations.
